Where the name Bachkovo came from
The origin of the village’s name is explained by many different hypotheses, of which two are the most plausible. According to one of them, the name “Bachkovo” comes from the so-called “tax bach”. This was a road tax that travelers passing through the valley of the Chepelare River paid in the Middle Ages. Another explanation, which seems even more plausible, is that “Bachkovo” comes from the Turkish word bachia – dairy. In ancient times, on the site of today’s village, there were monastery dairy plants. This is also confirmed by the fact that the Greeks, from the nearby town of Stanimaka (Asenovgrad), created the village of Bayo, which is also translated as “milk”.
Bachkovo – History
The area of today’s village of Bachkovo has been inhabited since ancient times. On the site of the Bachkovo Monastery, long before its foundation, there was a Thracian sanctuary, as evidenced by the found slabs of the Thracian Horseman, and next to it – a settlement. It seems that the Thracian settlement arose exactly on the road that existed here in ancient times during the Thracian-Hellenic era. Bachkovo was one of the main arteries connecting the Thracian lowland with the coast of the Aegean Sea through the Rhodopes. This road, known to historians as the “Eastern Trans-Rhodope Road”, was laid here around the first century AD. Then the Romans conquered the Rhodopes, and it existed here in the following historical periods with only minor changes in its route.
Bachkovo – in post-modern history
During the Second Bulgarian Empire (12th-14th centuries), Bachkovo, as a settlement belonging to the Rhodope region, often passed from Bulgarian to Byzantine rule and back. During this period, there was a fortress nearby, connected to the road passing through the valley. According to local legends, it was located in the Chernevitsa district, where the fortress of the same name existed during the reign of Tsar Ivan Shishman. After the conquest of the Rhodopes by the Ottomans (1371–1373), Bachkovo retained its importance as a roadside settlement. It came under the rule of the Ottoman Empire, after which it fell on consecrated land granted by the local feudal lord for pious purposes for the construction of religious Muslim institutions.
Bachkovo Monastery
Until the 19th century, Bachkovo was located northeast of the place where it is today and belonged to the Yurtishchi district. Before that, on the present site of Bachkovo, there were monastery dairy-processing enterprises. People from the ancient village worked there, after which the monks ceded these lands to them to settle by the river. Living between the Bachkovo Monastery and one of the largest centers of the Greeks in Bulgaria – Stanimaka, which is now called Asenovgrad, the residents of Bachkovo were strongly influenced by Greek culture almost until the national liberation in 1878. To understand the seriousness of the situation at that time, it should be said that the Bulgarian language in the local school was officially introduced only in 1875. That is why, in one of the first decrees on the establishment of the Bulgarian Exarchate, the village was included together with the Greek villages and the town of Stanimaka.
Bachkovo in the 20th century
In the post-war period, Bachkovo continued to grow actively. It even became one of the largest villages in this part of the Rhodopes. This is due to its proximity to the town, which largely served as a source of livelihood for the residents. Its population in 1900 was 1,107 residents. Today, the local population earns its living by working in Asenovgrad. However, there are also official activities related to the year-round tourist flow to the Bachkovo Monastery. The village has many hotels, guest houses, and restaurants, always ready to welcome the most valued guests.

The Bulgarian identity of the residents of Bachkovo was not suppressed, but was placed in geographical and economic dependence on the powerful Greeks. Due to their unfavorable position, the Bulgarians could not wage an open struggle with the Greeks. However, during the years of national liberation, the majority of the local population declared itself Bulgarian. Despite all the unfavorable conditions regarding nationality, throughout all the centuries of its existence Bachkovo has been preserved as a purely Bulgarian and Rhodope village, which in life, speech, and customs belongs to the ethnographic group of the Rupi. The village church “St. Athanasius” was built in 1848, and from the very beginning of the services in it they were conducted in Greek, and after the Liberation – in Church Slavonic.
