Samokov – car rental, information, sights

Samokov is a cozy town in western Bulgaria. It is part of Sofia Province and is 55 km by car from Sofia, 8 km by car from the winter resort Borovets, 29 km from the mineral springs of Separena Banya, 27 km from the spa complex in Dolna Banya, and 12 km south of the Iskar Reservoir. The Samokov basin lies between several mountains — Rila, Pirin, Vitosha, Verila, and the Ihtiman Middle Mountain — at 950 meters above sea level. The Iskra River and its tributaries flow through the center of the basin. The basin covers 185 km². Not far from the town, along the river, is the Iskar Reservoir.
Without a doubt, the town’s tourism is closely linked to the development of the Borovets winter resort. There are amazing winter landscapes, plenty of sun, and, of course, 24 ski runs with a total length of 58 km. The ski area includes three centers: Sitnyakovo — 1350 m–1780 m a.s.l., Yastrebets — 1340 m–2369 m a.s.l., and Markudzhik — 2144 m–2550 m a.s.l. The resorts offer all the necessary amenities for your stay.

In the past the town was associated with iron mining. At the foot of the Dospeiska (today Rila) mountain, by the Shishmanov Gorge, lies the Shishman Fortress. There is an early Christian basilica and a monastery complex. They date from the time of the Roman Empire and were burned by invaders in the 6th–7th century.
There was once a Roman settlement here, and the present town was founded later — at the beginning of the 14th century as a mining settlement.
The best-known attraction in Samokov is the Samokov Nunnery. It dates from 1772 and began as a small girls’ monastery. It was founded by Fota’s grandmother, who donated her property to the Rila Monastery and gathered a small group of girls in her house. By the mid-19th century more than a hundred nuns and novices lived there.
The monastery estate is enclosed on all sides by stone walls. Besides the church, the complex includes a monastery kitchen. Over time a whole complex of living and service buildings formed. In the building the iconostasis shows the Virgin Mary with baby Jesus and the first teachers Sts. Cyril and Methodius. The church also preserves icons from the Samokov school — St. Stephen, St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, John Chrysostom and others.
St. Nicholas Church
The church was built in 1859–1860. Its icons were painted by Samokov icon painters, but the church has no frescoes. St. Nicholas is the cemetery church. In its yard are buried notable Samokov figures such as Zahari Hadzhiguruv and Zahari Zograf. Today their gravestones are kept in the Historical Museum.
The Metropolitan Church was built in the 18th–19th century. It is also called “Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.” The church stands on the site of a small 17th-century church and was built with help from the people of Samokov. It was built partly underground. In 1805 they began restoring the church.
In addition to its sights, Samokov is known as a center for winter sports: south of the town is the world-famous Borovets resort. Nearby are the Govedartsi ski area and the Malevitsa tourist complex, located in “Mecha Polyana” at 1720 m. There is a hotel, ski runs and ski facilities with all the amenities for winter sports.
The Malevitsa tourist base is the only base located in the alpine part of the Malevishka Djala (the Malevitsa area) of northwest Rila. Other bases include Zavrachitsa (2178 m), Musala (2390 m), Mechit (1670 m), Shumnatica (1300 m), Vada and Maritsa.
Natural sights
Rila National Park. It was created in 1992 and is the largest park in the Balkans. It covers 81,000 hectares and is home to rare and endangered species. About 1,400 plant species grow here. Forty-two of them are protected by law, 98 are listed in the Red Book, nine are on the IUCN’s black list, and six are listed among Europe’s rare, threatened, endemic plants. Only in Rila can you see the Rila primrose, the cuff (manshet) and Pavlov’s rhubarb. The park also has 282 species of moss, 130 types of algae, 233 species of fungi, five types of fish, 20 amphibian and reptile species, 99 bird species and 48 mammal species.
Besides its sights and flora, Samokov is known for its cuisine. The food is traditionally Bulgarian and depends on the local produce. Samokov is widely known for its potatoes. A traditional town dish — zelnik (a Bulgarian pie with leek and sorrel filling) — is similar to the “kapustnik” pie. In the Samokov area, you can taste all those tasty dishes prepared to special local recipes. When you come to town, don’t miss the best restaurants in Samokov. To do this, the easiest option is to order a rental car even without a credit card.
